To check the wastage of water in reverse osmosis (RO) water purifiers which further puts burden on the sewerage treatment plants in the state, the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has approached the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) to examine the necessity of the RO-treated water and its harmful effects on human body due to deficient minerals. There were reports that the RO-purified water had low PH which was harmful for the body. As ROs drain out minerals from water during its treatment, its consumption was leading to deficiency of minerals in the body.
The RO system for drinking water should be installed where Total dissolved solids (TDS) in the water was more than 750 ppm. However in most areas of Punjab, TDS of groundwater varies between 250 and 600 ppm. In southwest Punjab, where TDS is more than 750 ppm, drinking water is supplied through canals which has TDS lower than 500 ppm. So there is no need for RO systems. Rather other methods of water purification from micro-organism can be installed.
Reverse osmosis, commonly referred to as RO (RO) is a water purification technology that uses a semipermeable membrane to remove ions, molecules, and larger particles from drinking water. Reverse osmosis can remove many types of dissolved and suspended species from water, including bacteria, and is used in both industrial processes and the production of potable water.
