Protein-rich rice developed

• Researchers from Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (IGKV),Chattisgarh have developed a protein-enriched rice variety.
• They had worked for seven years to develop the variety of rice that is rich in protein along with high zinc content.
• It was the first zinc biofortified rice variety developed in India.
• The rice variety has over 10.5% protein content, which is 3% more than what is found in any popular variety. It has been developed by crossing a protein-rich germplasm with a high-yielding rice variety called Naveen.
• Scientists have plans to gradually increase the protein content in rice by cross breeding it with more high-yielding varieties.
• The major problem with protein-rich rice varieties is that their yield is quite low compared to other varieties. Hence, farmers are not inclined to cultivate it
• The new variety ensures better yield and is tolerant to some diseases. The variety yields over 5.5 tonne a hectare in irrigated ecosystem and is best suited for eastern region of the country.

Zinc in diet:

• Zinc is found in cells throughout the body. It is needed for the body's defensive (immune) system to properly work. It plays a role in cell division, cell growth, wound healing, and the breakdown of carbohydrates.
• Zinc is also needed for the senses of smell and taste. During pregnancy, infancy, and childhood the body needs zinc to grow and develop properly. Zinc also enhances the action of insulin.

Analysis:

• Our present varieties of rice are not rich in protein content as it is mainly having carbohydrates, so there is need in India to develop zinc-rich rice varieties along with rich protein content.
• It would serve as a boon for malnourished population, especially children, in the tribal-dominated Chhattisgarh.
• The rice variety will play a crucial role in fighting protein deficiencies.
• Rice is the staple food in India and consumed on a regular basis, the research focused on enhancing its micro-nutrients and protein contents. For majority of the people who do not eat meat products or can't afford pulses, rice could be a good source of protein.
• As per a survey conducted in 2015 very high rate of malnutrition was found among preschool children in tribal areas across Chhattisgarh which is considered rice bowl of the country. The survey had showed that over five lakh children in the state are underweight and stunted growth especially in the tribal districts
• The way scientists have developed high protein rice, researches should also be done to improve the protein quality in other food items like pulses and wheat which are also key components of Indian meal.
