Following in the footsteps of Rajasthan, where the priceless heritage of its palaces, forts and havelis is the biggest tourist attraction, now Himachal too has also formulated and notified the Himachal Pradesh Heritage Tourism Policy 2017. The policy was notified as per the decision of the Cabinet taken on October 4, 2017, that the Himachal Pradesh Heritage Tourism Policy 2017 has been notified.
Even though there are some nice forts and palaces but unlike Rajasthan, a few are being run as heritage hotels. Barring a heritage hotel in Nalagarh Fort, Woodville Palace Hotel (Shimla), Taragarh Palace Hotel near Palampur and Raj Mahal in Mandi, not too many heritage properties are being used for commercial purpose in Himachal.
Objective: The main objective of the policy is to preserve the heritage and culture through forts, palaces and havelis and open new areas and divert tourist influx from the saturated tourist destinations like Shimla, Manali and Kasauli.
Places to be covered under policy: The policy will cover palaces, castles, forts, havelis, lodges and residences built prior to 1950. The façade and architectural features should have distinctive qualities and ambience in keeping with the traditional way of life and heritage of HP
Conditions for incentives: • To qualify for incentives like domestic rates of electricity and water, the structure must have a minimum of five rooms • The ownership of such hotels must be in the name of individuals or proprietors and not in the name of any partnership firm, company or consortium • The hotel could be run by family or by professionals • The department will certify the property as a heritage property before it is registered with the department and offered to tourists. • The Tourism Department will give publicity on its website • Though it is mandatory for any hotel to have a parking,in case of a heritage property, exemption will be given to such hotels
