The TPP is an economic arm of the US Rebalance to Asia Policy. Since India has been an important part of the Asia policy, and is not a signatory to the TPP, there are widespread speculations as to how the TPP will impact India. While several opine that the overall impact is uncertain at this point, there are various channels through which the TPP can affect India.
1. Economic strength and population size – 40 % of world trade + 800 million population. 2. Diversity in membership will boost geopolitical ties of such a common market: a. Latin America – Peru and Chile b. NAFTA – US + Canada + Mexico c. ASEAN – Malaysia + Brunei + Singapore + Vietnam d. Trans Tasman Neighbours – Australia + New Zealand 3. Interplay of comparative advantage: a. Mineral rich – trade intensive Latin America (Peru and Chile) b. Automobile experts – Japan and USA c. Farm and poultry producers – Australia, New Zealand and USA etc.
1. The prior negotiations for about 5 years were deliberately kept secret to keep China at bay. 2. There will be intense competition in labour market with cheap labour markets like Vietnam feeding at the cost of American Markets. 3. It will pave the way for companies to sue governments that change policies like health and education to favour state-provided services. 4. The secret deliberations have kept the voters in these countries in dark thus, violating the their claims of being democracies.
