The Potential
The inland water transport was an important mode earlier, but it declined after the coming of railways. The inland water transport is a cheap, fuel-efficient, environment-friendly mode with a higher employment generation potential and is suitable for heavy and bulky goods. The potential for development of this mode of transportation is very promising. IWT mode is best-suited for movement of bulk cargo, over dimensional cargo and hazardous goods. IWT also offers an environment-friendly economic mode of transport compared to road and rail. According to recent studies, the total external costs of inland navigation after accounting for all externalities, including accidents, congestion, noise emissions, air pollution and other environmental impacts are seven times lower than that of road transport. Transport over waterways is especially effective when the source and/or destination are waterfront locations. On Ganga (NW-1) alone there are 10 thermal power plants and at least 10 more are slated to come up in near future . The transportation of coal to these power plants is considered to be one of the most challenging tasks. IWT can be effectively used for this purpose, particularly for the imported coal since most of these plants would be importing 10–20 per cent of their coal which can be transported through NW-1.
