United States has harshly criticised the Russian bombing. It will lead Russia into a “quagmire”. For Secretary Carter, the bombing by Russia is a recipe for disaster. The US, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and others have called upon Russia to stop bombing non-IS targets, but to no avail. By sending four SU-30 Flankers capable of air-to air action to Latakia, Russia has sent a warning to Turkey which wants a no-fly zone along its border with Syria. Egypt has endorsed Russia. It is to be noted that Egypt has run the risk of incurring the displeasure of Saudi Arabia, its main aid giver.
But what are these countries likely to do? Will Saudi Arabia and Qatar provide the rebels they support with missiles to bring down planes? Till now, they have followed Washington’s advice not to part with sophisticated weapons lest they land up in wrong hands. Obama is right when he said that Putin has added fuel to the fire. Will the refuge influx faced by European nation lead to further heating up this region. India has said that this can be the largest migration problem faced by Europe after WW II. We should not forget that India had to fight a full scale war with Pakistan in 1971 for the demographic invasion of 10 million refugees in to Indian territory.
Our PM while addressing the UN general assembly meeting in New York had stressed on the restructuring of UN. He not only stressed on curbing the increasing challenge from Global Terrorism but also emphasized on differentiating good terrorism and bad terrorism. The clash of titans might give weight to PM Modi’s address at UN where he stressed on the Universal Definition of Terrorism. By Russian military action on ISIS and its intervention in Syria the new world order might witness a balance of power between US/NATO and Russia/China. This may result in a blessing in disguise and threat to ISIS existence. The Bipolar world order might emerge again thus limiting or finishing the non state violent actors.
