‘Jan Aushadhi’ is a campaign launched by the Department of Pharmaceuticals in association with Central Pharma Public Sector Undertakings, to provide quality medicines at affordable prices to the masses. Jan Aushadhi stores have been set up to provide generic drugs, which are available at lesser prices but are equivalent in quality and efficacy as expensive branded drugs.Under the Jan Aushadhi Scheme, the State Governments are required to provide space in Government Hospital premises or any other suitable locations for the running of the Jan Aushadhi Stores (JAS). Any NGO/Charitable Society/Institution/Self Help Group with experience of minimum 3 years of successful operation in welfare activities, can also open the Jan Aushadhi store outside the hospital premises.
How is the government supporting those opening Jan Aushadhi Stores
The government has charted out certain incentives that would help and facilitate the opening of the stores. The government would provide a financial assistance of up to Rs two lakh to the owners of the store along with a further Rs 50,000 assistance for purchase of computer hardware and other infrastructural support.
As a regular incentive the store owners would be a 16 per cent discount on the MRP of the generic medicines. This would be a pure margin on the price of the medicines that would be the profit for the store owners. Along with this, the government would also provide a maximum and minimum incentive to all store owners based on their overall sales per year.
