  • Mercer’s Quality of Living rankings 2017 has been released. Mercer’s survey is one of the comprehensive and annual features to enable multinational companies and other employers to compensate employees fairly when placing them on international assignments.

Highlights of the survey:

  • Globally, Vienna occupies first place for overall quality of living for the eighth year running, with the rest of the top-ten list mostly filled by European cities: Zurich (2), Munich (4), Dusseldorf (6), Frankfurt (7), Geneva (8), Copenhagen (9), and Basel, a newcomer to the list, in 10th place.
  • The only non-European cities in the top ten are Auckland, (3) and Vancouver (5).
  • The highest ranking cities in Asia and Latin America are Singapore (25) and Montevideo (79), respectively.

Index and India:

  • Hyderabad emerged as the city with the best quality of living in India for the third year in a row. It was ranked 144 in the global survey, followed by Pune and Bangalore at 145 and 146.
  • Hyderabad continues to score high, in comparison with other surveyed Indian cities, on account of lower crime rate – violence is uncommon in Hyderabad and in general, the police force is efficient and reliable.
  • New Delhi on the other hand, continued to be ranked the lowest amongst the surveyed Indian cities, for the second year in a row. It was globally ranked 161, closely behind Kolkata at 160 and Mumbai at 154.
  • While New Delhi scores well on account of its airport facility, availability of international schools and low probability of natural disasters. These positives are offset by a variety of negatives including a "notorious" crime rate, air pollution and water availability.
  • The survey highlights that Indian cities that have been part of the survey haven’t made much progress on the quality of living scale since last year.
  • Chennai was the only Indian city whose score marginally improved mainly on account of public transport, including buses and a recently expanded two-line metro system, and improved availability of expat housing.
  • Amongst Indian cities, Mumbai is ranked the highest at 141, followed by Kolkata (149) and Pune (151). Bengaluru is rated the lowest, amongst the surveyed Indian cities, ranked at 177.

About index:

  • Mercer takes into account the following metrics to judge which cities made the list for the best quality of life:
  • Political and social environment (political stability, crime, law enforcement)
  • Economic environment (currency-exchange regulations, banking services)
  • Socio-cultural environment (media availability and censorship, limitations on personal freedom)
  • Medical and health considerations (medical supplies and services, infectious diseases, sewage, waste disposal, air pollution)
  • Schools and education (standards and availability of international schools)
  • Public services and transportation (electricity, water, public transportation, traffic congestion)
  • Recreation (restaurants, theatres, cinemas, sports and leisure)
  • Consumer goods (availability of food/daily consumption items, cars)
  • Housing (rental housing, household appliances, furniture, maintenance services)
  • Natural environment (climate, record of natural disasters)
