Fenced forest to curb monkey menace
Himachal has decided to experiment with the idea of creating a fenced forest to house 5,000 monkeys in the Simbalbara National Park near Paonta Sahib in a bid to curb the problem of monkey menace.
The official to identify a chunk of land which was located away from the inhabited area and would not block the passage and movement of tigers and elephants in the Rajaji National Park which was contiguous to the Simbalbara sanctuary. There is a common corridor that wildlife, including tigers and elephants use.
Efforts by the Forest Department to set up monkey enclosures in the vicinity of the state capital did not fructify. Following opposition to the move to set up the monkey centre at Tara Devi, a site near Jathia Devi was identified, but the proposal had to be dropped due to stiff opposition by the villagers. The officials have been asked to plant fruit bearing species which the monkeys can feed on besides they being provided additional feed.
