Historic Gandhi Sewa Ashram in Una faces neglect
Gandhiji’s disciple Meera Ben had initiated freedom struggle from this place.
Gandhi Sewa Ashram at Oel village here that was once a hub of freedom struggle is in a bad state.
After some years, most part of the constructed area had been rented out to private parties by Mahashay Titrath Ram’s son, who mostly lived abroad. Post Independence, while a Trust was constituted to manage the affairs of the ashram, there is no clarity regarding its activities.
The busts of Mahatma Gandhi and Mahashay Tirath Ram, besides historic photographs of freedom fighters, are gatheringdust. Wild shrubs have invading the compound. Leaking roofs, broken doors and littered floors speak of the neglect of the historic ashram, which awaits the intervention of the government to be able to speak about its past glory and services rendered in the struggle to successive generations. Some part of the land had been rented out. Since the ashram had strong connection with the freedom struggle, efforts would be made to preserve its history and heritage, according to sources the ashram would be refurbished under the ‘’Aaj Purani Rahon Se’’ scheme launched by the state government.
