The state panchayati raj department will soon form a new wing named Bihar panchayati Raj engineering organisaton by recruiting more than 1500 engineers for the better implementation of the Mukyamantri Grameen Pey Jal Nischai scheme,- one of the seven resolves of chief minister Nitish Kumar.
The scheme offers to provide safe drinking water through pipelines to rural population.
Sources said the move comes after reports of widespread bungling in the scheme due to corrupt practices by the panchayati raj representatives including mukhiyas.
So far, FIRS against 12 mukhiyas across the state has been registered for financial discrepancies in the implementation of the drinking water scheme.
Under the drinking water scheme, each of the 1.14 lakh rural wards are being covered . Bihar has total 8386 gram panchayats with 1.14 lakh wards.
In each ward, a boring and raised tank along with PVC pipes is being set up to provide drinking water through pipelines in local households.
Sources said each of the ward gets around Rs 12 lakh for implementation of the scheme. In last two years, Rs 1000 crore has been spent in implementation of the scheme in rural areas.
Within four years, all the households of bihar will be connected with piped drinking water under Mukhyamantri Grameen Pey Jal Nischay scheme.
The secretaries of rural development department (RDD) and and public health engineering department (PHED) were asked to prepare a detailed work-plan on the piped water supply scheme.
