Meri Cycle Meri Pasand Yojana launched by Haryana Government

The Haryana Government led by the Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Manohar Lal Khattar has launched an ambitious scheme “Meri Cycle Meri Pasand” for the scheduled caste students of the state.

Facts :

• This is a free bicycle distribution scheme. Under this scheme, the state government provides free bicycles to the eligible and needy students of the state.
• Under the Haryana Meri Cycle Meri Pasand Yojana, the Haryana Education Department will provide free bicycles to the students of Scheduled Class (SC Category) who are studying in the 6th, 9th and 11th Class of any government school and are living two kilometers away from schools.
• The height of the bicycle is 20 and 22 inches.
• The price of 20 inch cycle is Rs. 2,525 with 7 percent tax.
• The price of 22 inch cycle is Rs. 2,775 and with 7 percent tax.
• Parents of students must firstly buy their own bicycles. After this for promoting the Direct Fund scheme, the Department will transfer the same amount spent to buy bicycle in the accounts of the students.
• This scheme has a unique feature that the student will have the choice to buy bicycle of their own choice.
• A three day Bicycle Mela was held in different districts of state in which parents and students will select the bicycle of their own choice being displayed by the cycle dealers.

Analysis :

• Earlier, the Education Department of Haryana provide bicycles to scheduled caste students without knowing their choices but now the student have opportunity to buy bicycle of their own choice.
• Parents of Scheduled Castes has shown rage over subsided bicycle scheme of Haryana Government as at the cycling mela the bicycle dealers demanded the money in addition to the money provided by Haryana Government to the students.
• The government has decided to pay 2525 for 20 inch bicycles and for 22 inch bicycle 2775 rupees and 7 percent GST.But no dealer is ready to give the bicycle to this fixed amount.
• They are demanding the amount of bicycle for at least Rs.3300-3400 and the remaining amount is demanded from the parents so this scheme is widely criticized in whole state by parents of the students.
• The parents also showed anger over the scheme as they had left their day wages to attend the fair for selecting bicycle for their childrens of their choice but due to extra amount demanded by the dealers they have to return empty handed.
• Government should take immediate notice regarding this and should regulate the distribution of bicycles by their own department so as these types of issues can be addressed.
