Israel to boost 'White Revolution' in Haryana

Mr.Uri Ariel, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Israel, announced that Israel will provide increased support to Haryana’s White Revolution, in Israel.

Facts :

• The white revolution in Haryana is set to get an Israeli boost. A leading state in milk production, Haryana would now benefit from the techniques and experience of Israel, leader in milk production in the world, for increasing the average milk production.
• This was stated by the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister, Mr. Om Prakash Dhankar, who is leading a delegation from Haryana to Israel.
• The average milk production of milch animals in Israel was 32 kg per day and it leads the world in milk production.
• Haryana would now adopt techniques and experience of Israel to increase average milk production in the state.
• Agriculture Ministers of both Haryana and Israel agreed on further cooperation in the fields of horticulture and dairy, and exchange of research among students and specialists in universities of agriculture, horticulture and animal sciences.

Analysis :

• HARYANA is one of the most progressive states of Republic of India. In the domain of dairy development it is well known for its productive milch cattle particularly the 'Murrah' Buffaloes and Haryana Cows. The economy of the state is predominantly based on agriculture. People rear and breed cattle as a subsidiary occupation.
• Mr. Ariel, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Israel said cooperation with Haryana was a priority.
• Israel is already working on five centres of excellence in Haryana.
• In future, work and cooperation between Haryana and Israel will increase and it will benefit former.

Other Projects of Haryana and Israel :

• Haryana will seek Israel's assistance in conserving water and to resolve the problem of depleting groundwater levels in the state.
• Five centres of excellence proposed to run in the Haryana State with the assistance of Israel are :
• Centre of Excellence for Vegetables which has been established in Gharaunda, district Karnal, Centre of Excellence for Fruits in Mangiana, district Sirsa and Centre of Excellence for Sub-Tropical Fruits in Ladwa, district Kurukshetra. An integrated bee keeping development centre would be inaugurated in Ramnagar, district Kurukshetra in this year. Besides, a Centre of Excellence for Flowers would soon be established in Jhajjar.
• The state government was promoting horticulture and peri-urban agriculture would be promoted to avail the benefit of proximity to the National Capital Region.
• The state government was taking special steps for the promotion of horticulture, under which Maharana Pratap Horticulture University has been established in village Anjansthali, district Karnal.

Haryana Dairy Development Corporation :

• The Haryana Dairy Development Corporation was formed in 1970 which continued active functioning till 31.03.1977. Thereafter its business was taken over by Haryana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation Limited to promote socio-economic interests of milk producers of Haryana State particularly belonging to economically weaker section thereof by purchase and processing milk into milk products and marketing through affiliated milk unions. Dairy Cooperatives in Haryana works as per the following three tier system:- i) Milk Producers Cooperative Societies at village level ii) Milk Unions at District level iii) State Dairy Federation at state level.
• The Haryana Dairy Development Co-operative Federation Ltd. registered under Haryana Co-operative Societies Act came into existence on April 1,1977. Its authorized share capital is Rs.4000 lacs. It was established with the primary aim to promote economic interests of the milk producers of Haryana particularly those belonging to weaker sections of the village community by procuring and processing milk into milk products and marketing thereof by itself or through its unions.

National Milk Day :

• Every year 26 November is being observed as National Milk Day (NMD) to mark birth anniversary Father of the White Revolution Dr.Verghese Kurien.
• The idea of observing National Milk Day was first mooted by Indian Dairy Association (IDA) in 2014 on the lines of World Milk Day observed on June 1 under the aegis of UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
• The first NMD was observed on 26 November 2014 by all Indian diary sector majors including National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), IDA along with around 22 state level milk federations.
