Himachal Pradesh done HIV profiling of jail inmates
Himachal has earned the distinction of becoming the second state after Rajasthan in the country to get HIV profiling of its prison inmates done and seven out of 2,013 inmates have tested positive for HIV. The exercise was undertaken because prison inmates and other closed settings were at an increased risk of HIV infection because they lacked access to prevention and care services.
The project is funded by John Elton AIDS Foundation, UK, and the permission was granted in May 2018. The interventions targeted by the project included information, education and communication on HIV, counselling and testing, treatment, care and support, prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV, besides raising awareness on HIV transmission through medical and dental services, tattooing, piercing and other forms of skin penetration, he added. At present, there are about 2,450 inmates, including 99 females lodged in 12 jails of the state out of which 2/3 are undertrials.
AIDS
AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is a syndrome caused by a virus called HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). The disease alters the immune system, making people much more vulnerable to infections and diseases. This susceptibility worsens if the syndrome progresses. HIV is found throughout all the tissues of the body but is transmitted through the body fluids of an infected person (semen, vaginal fluids, blood, and breast milk).
Causes
Treatment
The red ribbon is the worldwide symbol of support and awareness for people living with HIV. There is currently no cure for HIV or AIDS. Treatments can stop the progression of the condition and allow most people living with HIV the opportunity to live a long and relatively healthy life. HIV antiretroviral treatment is crucial — it improves quality of life, extends life expectancy, and reduces the risk of transmission, according to the World Health Organization's guidelines issued in June 2013.
Antiretroviral drugs
HIV is treated with antiretrovirals (ARVs). The treatment fights the HIV infection and slows down the spread of the virus in the body. Generally, people living with HIV take a combination of medications called HAART (Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy) or cART (Combination Antiretroviral Therapy).
