 Rajasthan becomes the first state to implement biofuel policy

Rajasthan has become the first state in the country to implement the National Biofuel Policy (Biofuel Policy) of the Government of India 2018. In the Indira Gandhi Panchayati Raj Training Institute, the biofuel authority approved the implementation of the biofuel policy 2018 in the fourth meeting of the Empowered Committee.

• National Bio-Fuel Policy -2018 has been announced by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas of the Government of India on June 4, 2018. The objective of National Biofuels Policy is to promote the production of bio-fuels at home.

• Under the biofuel policy, awareness of its use and awareness of the spread of oil seeds, as well as increasing its production and marketing system, will be emphasized.
• With the financial assistance of Indian Railways for the production of biodiesel in Rajasthan, biodiesel production plant having capacity of 8 tonnes per day has been established in the state.

Highlights of the National Biofuels Policy -2018:

Bio-fuels in the national biofuels policy are called bioethanol and biodiesel of first generation (1g) and advanced bio-fuels (second generation) of ethanol, solid waste of corporation (MSW) to drop-in fuel, third generation (3G) of Jove Fuel, BioCNG etc. have been categorized so that appropriate financial and economic stimulus can be enhanced under each category.

In this policy, the scope of raw material for ethanol production has been expanded using sugarcane juice, sugar-containing material, starch content and damaged grains such as wheat, broken rice and rotten potatoes.
During the extra production stage, farmers are at risk of not getting fair value of their product. Keeping this in mind, with the approval of National Biofuels Coordination Committee in this policy, permission has been given to use additional grains for mixing it with petrol for ethanol production.

Policy was encouraged to set up supply chain mechanisms for the production of non-edible oilseeds, used cooking oils, and small grain crops for biodiesel production.
