The Uttar Pradesh forest department is considering setting up of a wildlife chair at Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) for disease management, diagnosis and conservation of wild animals. Forest officials said they would soon take up the proposal with the advisory board. Officials want IVRI to conduct research considering the requirement of the state forest department.
The wildlife chair will prove to be an asset in the future as it will focus on diagnosis of various diseases and conservation. According to forest officials, they are unable to save animals due to lack of proper research. They said few cases were reported in the past when wild animals died, but the postmortem could not ascertain the reason behind their deaths, thus it is important for IVRI to do research according to the need of the department. Officials said if IVRI would have health card of animals in captivity, it would help eliminate diseases.
UP forest department had also sought help from Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to provide customised technology and equipment to mitigate man-animal conflict. Officials said they wanted taser gun (non-lethal) for instant mobilisation of aberrant animals, laser guided dart gun, laser finder for big cats hiding in sugarcane fields, virtual laser wall and protective gear for staff.
With the help of technology, officials want to change man-animal conflict into coexistence. It takes days to find exact location of a tiger hiding in a sugarcane field, but if we get technology like laser finder, they will be able to trace the big cat in few minutes. Robots with camera will be helpful when a leopard is trapped inside a room. Similarly, when their staff use tranquilising gun, the dart is unable to hit the animal due to foliage. In such a situation, laser-guided dart gun will be useful as it would pass the foliage. Likewise, non-lethal taser gun can be used for instant mobilisation of aberrant animals.
