The Centre has approved a Rs 2.4-crore project for conserving and beautifying the urban forest area in the Dharamsala city. The project has been named the Nagar Vana Udyan Yojana. The Centre will provide Rs 1.6 crore while the remaining amount be contributed by the state government. Old pine trees would be replaced by local broad-leaved trees. There was a proposal to develop botanical gardens in which herbs, bamboo and other rare varieties would be planted. In the biodiversity parts, cycling tracks would be developed
Issue: According to information, several hectares have been encroached upon by locals and Tibetans. Although the Forest Department has filed 214 cases against the Tibetans, they could not be evicted as they have been granted the refugee status. According to the Centre’s directives, the Himachal Government is supposed to provide double the land Tibetans have been occupying before evicting them from the forestland.
