Subsequent to the internet revolution and digitilisation of life , information is shared globally at lightening fast speed . With the emergence of social media and networking the information from a person's day to day events to a natural disaster or any breaking news is projected in the infinite digital continuum which is accessible by anyone . This creates a sense of universal consciousness . Every information is collected , collated aand quantified enhancing the overall aawareness .
Apart from doing all the unprecedented goods the media has been found the culprit as it allegedly over-hypes issues and stirs public emmotions for its own fanancial benefits . If observed carefully the media lobbies the the established institutions in order to fulfill their own short term agendas . The casses of paaid media for political gains have surfaced from time to time questioning their legitimacy and ethics .
In the age of enlightenment , printed/written media was majorly responsible for revolutions . During the Indian freedom struggle printed media was the major instrument of communicating with the masses and spreading modern ideas . But in the post-liberlizaation era they have influenced several crucial judicial verdicts , to some extent they facilitated riots in Muzaffarnagar , 2013 by painting a wrong picture , mounted pressure on the goverment facilitating populistic demands either for TRP or political agendas . The hyperactive role in India's context has been feeding the masses with negetive information leading to deepening of communication cleavage between the common man and the state . It has also led to uncaring and negetive attitude of masses towards the established structure . Indian media is often accused of partiality due to its focus on some regions and complete neglection of others . infact the recent JNU controversy was a result of the media's hunger for breaking news as they played a doctored video , mobilising various agents .
Freedom of speech and expression was hard earned and is the linchpin of a democracy as constructive criticism of the instituions leads to more efficient functionality . But this basic journalistic principle is forgotten by the majority and cappitalism has correupted their morale as now news is created not covered nor reported .
The social networking is also intertwined with digital media . Apart from creating misconceptions , it has led to social anxiety , especially among teenagers . It has also been instrumental in radicalising the youth as several devious fundamentalists have been influencing the young and docile minds .
With higer connectivity and active nature the media shoiuld act as a mirror of the population's problems , demands and needs and it should'nt be their opinion maker . The repulsion of Indian media by Nepalese people during the 2015 earthquake and the partisan nature of the world media while differential covering of Paris attacks compared to attaks by Boko Haram , are the indicators of multifarious problems and demand a change in the fucationing of media . As Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam pointed out once that India has so much to be proud of but the mdeia never highlights it .
The Indian democracy is at a very critical stage as media induced public unrest has induced the ideas of balcanisation further perpetuating communal hatred and issues . Once an idea is incepted it cannot be destroyed , demonstrating the prowess of information .So , it is time for media to accept its responsibility as it has to be the torchbearer of truth and it should start painting the correct image of contemporary events equally highlighting the positive and negetive news . The rightly balanced information has a trickle down effect to the psychological level and shapes the day to day life as well as the future of the nation .
Though , the Government has strictly implemented the FCRA with appropriate amendments so that the foreign contributions to the mdeia can be checked and the external agents cannot fiddle with the progressive trajectory of the country . But , still a suitable regulatory mechanism and background check of domestic contributions should be worked out keeping in mind the freedom of press , As the executive also consists of human beings which are susceptible to corruption thus , madating two way checks and balances .
