Anti-globalised sentiments on the rise or are we heading towards a deglobalised world?
Experts believe that the recent Brexit would likely trigger a wave of anti-globalisation with a domino effect over other geopolitical entities. Not only Brexit but the recent trends in the world order exacerbate the domino effect of deglobalisation. With political entities of mighty states hinting towards an inward looking foreign policy , the setting is perfect for a deglobalised world. The newer trends of intervention are not long time but shorter stints like those shown by Russia in its Syrian strategy. Interventionist foreign policy startegems are used ….. Russia deliberately weakened the Kurdish forces to bring them on table with the regime i.e intervention with the least involvement in the internal political affairs. Hence globalism which yearns for greater interconnectedness among the world without keeping in mind the sovereignity of individual identities is on a decline.
The pride of globalization i.e the geo-economic commons – open communication , open seas and open skies are too under tremendous strain . OPEN COMMUNICATION-National twists to the internet are evident in the China’s great firewall network and Russia Chebruhaska , but their impact was limited to only government regulation. Countries like north korea and Iran only are excluded from the web of internet. But the recent trends , like that of excluding Russia from the SWIFT payment gateways suggest the penetration level of the deglobalised sentiments
OPEN SKIES- Recent tensions between the European Union and Russia saw Europe banning a low-cost Russian carrier from flying to Europe and Russia talking about retaliation in the form of restrictions over its Siberian airspace to European carriers en route to East Asia. This would dramatically raise the cost of travel and put an end to our habits of easy transportation to an extent not fully appreciated by most. Some will welcome the easing of systemic risks such as the contagion effects of global pandemics, but one can be sure the costs of this new reality will far outweigh its meagre gains. Air travel becoming noticeably more inconvenient, a naval conflagration blocking off a trading route, or the creeping fragmentation of communication channels spreading beyond authoritarian regimes are all noteworthy signposts of a potentially de-globalized world.
OPEN SEAS- Conflicts over the sea lines of communication , South china sea , Indo-chinese struggle over the influence in Indian ocean and the future regions of struggle like the arctic region where ice is melting rapidly are perhaps some examples of the strained open sea navigation.
The phenomenon has a major political backing with many political idealogues turning to more conservative and inward strategies be it britain or the Us. Can we imagine a world where one cannot travel freely ; routing of air routes due to tensions between countries ; no free flow of goods , capital and people ; an era of sanctions imposed on numerous countries . How the events unfold in the future will be an interest thing to watch out for . A prescient person would suggest the business holdings to make their companies adept to such crisis and situations.
