India is among one of the fastest growing economies of the world. Countries agriculture is capable to produce 3 crops in a year. Still it is facing acute challenge of farmer suicides over the years. Reform process is in process still more encouragement is needed in agriculture sector. Particularly in Vidharbha region in Maharashtra, where studies revealed that on an average 9 farmers took his/her life in a day. 1541 suicides were reported in 2015 in Vidharbh region only. Maharashtra is followed by Telangana, MP, Chhattisgarh, and Karnataka. In Vidhrbh region farmers prefer cultivation of “White Gold” i.e. ‘Cotton’ a risky crop choice that suffers due to non availability of quality seeds and higher input cost. In addition to it, inability to buy costly BT. Cotton makes the situation worse.
A program which address repayment of loan and interest, availability of best quality seeds, inputs for the crop production, insurance against natural calamities, opportunities for alternative income through farming or non farming activities (employment through NREGA to build local infrastructure) and provisions of farmer markets, storages and sale has to be devised and implemented to improve the condition of farmers.
