The day Modi took oath as India’s 14th P.M, his move from conventional to unconventional diplomacy and inviting leaders from SAARC nations (along with Mauritius) set the tone of India’s foreign policy under Modi. In his first year stint he visited almost all neighbouring countries starting with Bhutan and shutting the mouth of critics who were anticipating him to be a nationalist Hardliner. Narendra Modi’s second year was followed by ground-breaking visit to Bangladesh, a swing through Central Asia, a long overdue visit to Afghanistan, and a renewed focus on the Middle East or West Asia. While flying back from Afghanistan, a surprise stopover in Pakistan, a trip no Indian prime minister had managed since 2004. In addition, Modi has in his first two years played host in India to most of the world’s top leaders, including those of the United States, China, Russia, France, Japan, and Germany. He also hosted a landmark India-Africa Forum Summit last November that involved 41 heads of state and government.
In almost three years Modi Government’s major foreign policy initiatives are as under:
New alliances post cold war and India’s inclusion in MTCR and a global edge in Space technology thus making India an international hub for launching satellites is a welcome step for India to be a Global player. The confiscation and seizure of Dawood Assets in UK and in Dubai/S Arabia curbing terrorism and other Govt schemes and initiatives indicate that there is a holistic approach in making New India, a status every Indian dream to achieve. The recent vote in favour of UN resolution by India (Jerusalem issue)proves that India is a mature democracy and believes in the fundamentals of UN and peaceful resolutions of conflicts.
