Sethusamudram project
The Sethusamudram Project is a long pending plan to build a shipping canal between India and Sri Lanka across the Palk Strait.
The need for such a water way is because :
1. The waters between India and Sri Lanka, the Sethusamudram ( Sethu - bridge, Samudram- sea) are shallow, and not very conducive to massive ships, and marine trade relations between the two nations often depend on smaller vessels etc.
2. Ships that sail from the western coast of India to the east coast currently have to circumvent Sri Lanka due to the narrow, shallow, non navigable Gulf of Mannar. Huge cost cuts are expected by the groups in favour of the construction of the bridge. Also, exposure of trade ships to military hostility is expected to reduce.
The canal is expected to reduce voyage time, fuel usage and hence costs. It is also projected as a huge employment generating opportunity which will simultaneously yield increase revenues and uplift people's status. Strategic military importance is conceivable given the location of the proposed canal.
*Religious Aspect : The alignment of the proposed bridge, although changed many times in the last 150 years, has invariably required some amount of damage to the Adams's Bridge/ Ram Setu, said to be a bridge built by the army of Indian God, Ram, to enable the army to cross over to Lanka, get rid of Ravan, etc etc.
*Environmental Aspect :Firstly, corals. Corals thrive in the shallow seas between the two nations. Obviously, they've to be thought of kindly. Secondly, fishing.
Oil spills, water pollution and the aftermath of the dredging...as in what will become of the dredged waste wrought by the process. The change in the biochemical oxygen demand and the natural balance in the waters.
The coral reef platforms between Thoothukudi and Rameswaram in the Gulf of Mannar are notified as a marine biosphere reserve of India. About more than 36,000 species of flora and fauna live here, flanked by mangroves and sandy shores considered conducive for turtles to nest.
*Military concerns: The southern coast of Tamil Nadu, hitherto relatively sheltered from naval attacks will be suddenly exposed to incoming ships from everywhere, through a channel voluntarily built at that.
However, using an interim order in 2007, the Supreme Court had stayed the dredging of the Ram Sethu after admitting a plea that it had immense religious value for Hindus.
Meanwhile, it has also been announced that the Indian Council of Historical Research will conduct a pilot project to “ascertain” if Ram Sethu was built naturally or by intelligent creatures.
