Reference Article: Perils of Privatisation by T.K. Rajalakshmi

The enormous increase in the numbers of students entering and emerging from higher education institutions has not been matched by commensurate job opportunities. The mushrooming of private institutions has led to a fall in the quality of education. The expansion of the education system has, no doubt, enabled more students to access higher education but they are unable to find the careers that justify the cost and time spent on education because jobs are available only to a privileged few from select institutions. The gulf between students’ aspirations and the ability of the higher education system to satisfy these aspirations will only widen unless the government drops its emphasis on privatisation.
