From the Gir sanctuary in Gujarat comes the shocking news of disaster that has struck the lion population there. As many 23 of the big cat have died in the forests due to a suspected viral disease. In a span of just 20 days, as much as 3.5 per cent of the lion population has been wiped off. A year ago, between the years 2016 and 2017, 184 Gir lions were reported to have died. A majority of them due to natural causes, while nearly 32 of unnatural causes like falling into wells or getting run over by trains. The dead also included cubs.
