The INSAS is a family of infantry weapons consisting of an assault rifle , a light machine gun and a carbine . In 1980s Army wanted to replace the 7.62 mm SLR which had been in use for 30 years and INSAS became the weapon of choice . However soon after the Kargil war in late 90s the quest to find a replacement for INSAS began . In January this year the defence acquisition council cleared fast track procurement of 72,400 assault rifles and 93, 850 carbines from the global market at a cost of 3547 crore rupees.
