Air Transport in Assam

  • Assam state of India is well connected with the rest of the country through Air Transport. The operational civil airports in the state are located at Guwahati, Tezpur, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur and Silchar. The airport located at Dhubri (Rupshi) district of Assam is lying closed and non-functional for long time. Apart from these, there are several private airstrips operated by tea gardens in Assam.
  • The only International Airport in Assam is Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Guwahati. It is also the only International Airport in the North-East India. The Guwahati airport is the busiest of all airports in Assam. After Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Jorhat are the 2nd and 3rd major airports in Assam. All major domestic airlines including private commercial airlines such as Air India, Jet Airways, JetLite, SpiceJet, Indigo and GoAir operates regular flights to and from Assam.

Major Airports in Assam:

  • Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (IATA: GAU, ICAO: VEGT): Also known as Guwahati International Airport or Borjhar Airport, the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is situated at Borjhar, Guwahati. All major domestic airlines of India operates regular fights to and from Guwahati.
  • Dibrugarh Airport (IATA – DIB, ICAO – VEMN): Also known as Mohanbari Airport, Dibrugarh Airport is situated at Mohanbari, Dibrugarh. It is the second most busiest airport in Assam.
  • Jorhat Airport (IATA – JRH, ICAO – VEJT): Also known as Rowriah Airport, the Jorhat Airport is situated at Rowriah, Jorhat, Assam. Jet Airways, Jet Lite and Air India Regional operates fights to and from Jorhat.
  • Silchar Airport (IATA – IXS, ICAO – VEKU): The Silchar airport is situated at Kumbhirgram in Silchar. It was built by the British in 1944. Jet Airways, Air India
  • Tezpur Airport (IATA – TEZ, ICAO – VETZ): The Tezpur airport is located at Salonibari near Tezpur. Lilabari Airport (IATA – IXI, ICAO – VELR): The Lilabari airport is situated at Libabari in Lakhimpur district of Assam.

Prospects of Growth:

  • Beig centrally locacated, Assam serves as the hub for air transport for North East, directly connecting all the capital cities of north east with airports of Assam.
  • Guwahati Airport is the only international airport of the region.
  • With reinvigorated Act East Policy, the connectivity with east Asian coutries is bound to increase. 
  • The Regional Connectivity Scheme of the govt has special thrust on north east. This have potential to transform the air transport of Assam.
  • With economic development, the sector is growing at very rapid pace.
  • The geographical constraints of the north east such as hilly terrain, numerous rivers, sparse population density, vulnerability to natural disasters such as floods, landslides etc. diminishes the scope of other means of transport.
